The moment we feel spring is in the air, we are reminded that it’s time to spring-clean our homes. But have you ever thought of doing the same for your body? After winter, we need to rid the toxins and stagnation that have been built up during “hibernation mode” so that we transition as smoothly as the seasons.

Below are the top foods I recommend to cleanse your body in preparation for Spring:

Leafy Greens, herbs, and sprouts
These fibrous and bright plants are great for sweeping clean the gut. They are also full of minerals and antioxidants that can help your body protect itself from the toxins you get exposed to. They are also high in chlorophyll, which means they can help cleanse your digestive tract and detoxify your liver. Try juicing your greens, blending them into soups or smoothies, adding them into wraps or as a salad mix. Always add some healthy fat (butter, olive oil or avocado) and acid (lemon juice or apple cider vinegar) to support proper absorption of the vitamins in the greens.

top picks: spinach, parsley, wheatgrass, alfalfa sprouts, arugula

Fibre
Why is dietary fibre so important? Fibre is needed for bowel regularity, colon detoxification, and to eliminate toxins from your body. It’s like a broom for your intestines! More fibre can also mean more weight loss because it makes you feel satisfied and full for longer. Aim for about 28 grams per day, however, it’s crucial to note that you must gradually add more fibre to your diet in order to avoid digestive upset.

top picks: chia seeds, freshly ground flax seeds, apples, avocados

Clean water
Perpetual dehydration can lead to constipation and toxic buildup, which is why it is important to drink plenty of clean, fluoride-free water every day. Our bodies need at least 8 to 10 glasses of water (or more!) daily to help flush out toxins. Add the juice of one organic lemon or 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar to an 8 ounce glass of water to help promote digestion, increase immunity, and remove toxins in your body. You can also add some sea salt to your water to help further promote detoxification.

Incorporating these suggestions this season will kickstart your goal to that summer body!
